No-Heat Curls with the Friar Tuck

About a year ago, I made a post called Curl Your Hair Without Heat about how to curl your hair with a headband after watching a video on YouTube. It has since turned into my most-viewed post and has generated a ton of emails from readers who want to know exactly how to do it.

Today, I bring you my very own video tutorial for what I like to call the "Friar Tuck."

More details:
  • I have fine hair—and a lot of it. It holds curl well.
  • This curling method does not work if your hair is wet. It must be completely dry.
  • If your hair falls out of this easily, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before going to sleep.
  • If you have long hair, try using two headbands to reduce tangles & make it easier to tuck!
  • Dry shampoo used: Suave
  • Sea salt spray used: Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Spray
  • Songs in the video: (1) 1234 by Feist (2) New Soul by Yael Naim
  • The photos below show my hair after an entire day. Some days the curls don't last quite as long.

  1. I love this! I've been trying for a while now to find a way to curl my hair without a curling iron and after trying different braids and knots and other ridiculous things I thought I was doomed because I couldn't get any of them to produce the look I was going for. Tried this today, friar tuck hung out in damp 2 - Day hair with a little bit of extra body mousse while I showered, did my makeup and got dressed. About an hour total. I cheated a bit and blasted it for a few seconds with my hair dryer, but when it came out it was absolutely amazing! Perfect curls and now I'm confident that I've found the method I am going to use to curl my hair for my wedding in a few months! Thank you so much for sharing this!

  6. Hey @shimmer! Couldn't send an email. I use this (http://instagram.com/p/WAXoFiCy6C/). It's a 2nd headband when you're ready to wrap both sections at the end. After that, wrap your head in a silk scarf to sleep. It will help it not fall out :)
